Rodney Orr’s memoir is full of fascinating Crimson Tide football anecdotes, but it’s Orr’s candid testimony about extreme family trauma that make it a powerful and highly-recommended read.
My late father, Bill Rice, Sr., was one of the avid and well-known posters at Tider Insider, especially on The Quad. Dad's posting handle was "WJR1268." That was his initials and the last four digits of our phone number. Rodney didn't know it (until I told him), but he mentions my Dad in his book - a story involving one of TI's nameless posters.
Dad really enjoyed all those conversations. He was a former UA player who posted at the site.
This story didn't make my "Top 50," but it's one of my favorite original research projects. In this piece, I identify "sports records that still boggle the mind."
Here's another story about my late father ("WJR1268" at TI). This story tells how my late father might have played an instrumental role in making AUBURN a football power in Alabama in the 1980s and 1990s. Dad did this by getting Pat Dye his assistant coaching job with Coach Bryant at Alabama in 1964. If Coach Dye hadn't been such a great long-time assistant at Alabama, I doubt he would have ever become the head coach and athletic director at Auburn.
Any visitors from Tider Insider might be interested in a few other stories that were published at this "Substack newspaper." Several are about Alabama football or people associated with Alabama football. This recent story list 50 of the site's most popular stories with links. My recent story on "greatest sports plays in Troy history," which I haven't added to this list, might also be interesting to anyone who is a sports fan. I'd love to get more subscribers from outside Pike County and write more stories for a state-wide audience.
I'm not overly impressed by most of our state's remaining "mainstream media" organizations.
Good story, Bill. Another former Alabama football player with an interesting story would be the late Christopher Sign. Has anyone dared to investigate why he would commit "suicide". Maybe no one dares to go there?
I hadn't thought of him in a while. Here's a good story on Christopher, his big journalistic scoop about the Clintons, and his death, supposedly from "suicide."

What a powerful story.. sounds like we can all use it as a reminder of what is important, which is why he probably wrote it! Good job, honey.
Exactly. Thank you for supporting my little media venture!

I never know what research tangent I'll go off on. I don't know why, but I recently did a deep research dive into "Miss America Trivia" and history.

Any story dealing with the Clintons might end up being dangerous to one's health.
Some people refer to it as being “Arkancided.”
