I've always loved playing sports, writing about sports and researching sports topics. I liked this story but couldn't find anyone who would publish it ... until I started my own Substack newspaper!
I should have mentioned another record that will almost certainly never be broken - the 258 points that the Troy State basketball game scored against DeVry Institute in the 1991 season. I was sports editor for The Troy Messenger when Coach Maestri's team shocked the basketball world that Sunday afternoon.
I plan on doing at least one retrospective about that mind-blowing feat. I remember that Troy hit 51 (!) three-pointers in that game. Almost all the scoring came on either 3-point shots or dunks.
That record has stood for 33 years. No college team that I am aware of has even broken 200 points since then.
And they all said that Secretariat didn’t have the stamina to survive the longer track at Belmont. He ran the last half faster than the first half, gaining speed at the finish.
Was going to mention the Troy basketball team but see you have made note of their accomplishment in your thread. Were you at that game? I have never talked with anyone who was actually at the game, it must have been amazing. Were they trying to score that many points? I mean was that the goal, to just let the ball fly? Simply amazing....
I was there as the sports editor for The Messenger. Yes, the team's goal was to break 200 points and "make history," which they had did (about half-way through the second half!). The Trojans had played the same team the prior season and, I think, scored 180 points.
Devry was terrible, but, still, it's hard to score 200 points in a 40-minute basketball game against a local YMCA or Girl Scout team. You have to shoot and hit a ton of 3-pointers and shoot them as fast as possible - which is what Troy did. This is an amazing story I look forward to re-visiting in the future.

The box score for that game must be something to behold!
it is!
Cal Ripken Jr., and his consecutive games played streak seems very unlikely to be beat, let alone even be approached.
Very interesting! And I don’t like sports!
